The Starter Package Includes:

1 – Paperpot Transplanter

The main component of the paper pot system.  With this tool, one person can transplant 264 seedlings in minutes!

The paperpot transplanter can be used for all paper chain pots we carry giving you the ability to space seedlings at 2, 4, and 6″ spacings.  Chain pots are loaded onto the deck of the transplanter and are pulled out of the transplanter behind you as you pull the transplanter forward.  A build in shoe cuts furrow into the soil to receive the chain pots while sweeps and the rear wheels close the furrow around the transplants.

The transplanter is versatile.  Growers have used this tool to transplant lettuce, radishes, turnips, onions, peas, beans, herbs, and many more crops.

Assembled the device is 12″ wide and 84″ long.  The height is adjustable from 32 to 44″ and it weighs around 35lbs.

Note:

Soil structure is critical to the performance of this tool.  Wet, heavy clay soils may make the device more challenging to use.  The device works best in light soils with good tilth.

1 – Paperpot System Starter Accessory Kit

Increase speed and efficiency in the greenhouse with the Paperpot System Starter Accessory Kit which includes:

1 – Dibbler

Quickly create depressions for seeds in all 264 holes of the paper chain pot.  The dibbler allows you to take what could be a time-consuming step of making 264 holes one by one and turns in into a simple step which only takes a few seconds.

The dibbler is manufactured to create 264 uniform 12mm holes which work in conjunction with paperpot drop seeders.

1 -Drop Seeder

Quickly and accurately seed all 264 holes of the paper chain pot in seconds.

Just imagine seeding 264 holes one by one by hand versus seeding all 264 holes in one quick step.  The drop seeder is another piece of appropriate technology which saves you money by decreasing labor and controlling seed waste.

The drop seeder comes with a 4.5mm seed plate that is designed for seeds such as radish, beets, and pelleted seeds like Salanova.

2 – Spreader Frame

The rigid metal frame holds the paper pots open inside the nursery flat while you fill the paper chain pots with soil.  After the soil has been added the frame can be removed, with the soil holding the chain pots open.

1 Pair of Spreader Bars

The metal rods slide into the sides of the compressed paper chain pots and are then used to pull the chain pots apart so you can place them onto the spreader frame. The spreader rods can be removed after the paper chain pots are secured on the spreader frame.

40 – Paperpot Germination Trays

Germination trays hold the paper chain pots during seeding and germination.  The trays give structure to the paper chain pots while providing drainage via bottom holes.  One tray can hold one paper chain (264 plants) and the plants must remain in the tray until transplanting.  Depending on the size of your farm you may need to order additional trays.

The germination trays can also be dually purposed for growing microgreens.

The complete starter package is the only way to fully utilize this tool!! I had thought I probably could get by without certain components but I would have been wrong!! the time saved by using this tool is unbelievable. Don’t attempt to take a short cut you may not think you need 40 trays to begin with however you absolutely do. The Paperpot.co really put a lot of thought into this “package” I highly recommend shopping and purchasing from paperpot.co.

This full starter kit had everything we needed to take the leap into paperpotting. This system has completely changed our farm. We have increased our farms productivity, while reducing seed starting and transplanting time(any tool that limits our time bent over has special value to us!) We use every element of the starter kit regularly . The only things we have chosen to buy in addition to the kit are more sizes of seed plates and bottom watering trays. As always we have been very happy with the great customer service and prompt delivery from paperpot.co.

The full starter kit is the way to go if you are interested in using the paperpot system on you farm. It is a well thought out package with all the important components to get you going. The paperpot system has been a game changer for our farm. We struggle to find help in the summer high production times in the area we are located. The paperpot system has allowed us to keep up with our planting even with the lack of help.

The starter kit is the way to go. It was easy to put together and get going. I’ve been using the system for 6 months and we like what we see. I still have chains left from the initial order, though it’s coming time to re order. All of the parts/pieces are easy and intuitive to use. As with anything, you get faster the more you do it. The quality of the cart, and even of the trays and chains is impressive. The cart is light and sturdy. The trays are super sturdy and the chains work and hold up as promised.

I was concerned about getting 2,4, AND 6″ chains automatically with the starter kit, thinking I didn’t really want 2″.
I see value in 2″ chains for green onions and I did have a batch of early turnips that worked out well in 2″. I expect to use more 2″ going forward for these 2 crops and I’ve been happy with experimenting. I DO seem to go through the 4 and 6″ faster( Sala, beets, flowers, G. onion, spinach)

The machine/cart itself takes a couple of hours of use to get used to, just like anything else. A recently prepared(loose) bed helps get the right depth figured out.

While your figuring the machine out, expect to plant some crops to high or to low. This can be fixed (by hand) after planting with the PP cart, but getting it right the first time is key. It took at least 45-55 minutes to plant a 30″ /75′ bed the first time. Now its down to 15-20 mins with the PP cart/trays, but I still find myself needing to spend at least 5-10 mins to bury/fix the ends of the beds and the bumps/dips along the length of the row. I’m hoping this gets better and it is easier with a helper(duh). Obviously, this is so much faster than planting single plants.

There are different size seed plates for the drop seeder. The only one that comes with the starter package is the 4.5mm. If you want more precision for smaller seed( or to have the larger seed work at all( think beets or fennel)) you will need to purchase the additional plates. I used the 4.5 mm for g. onion(dense bunches), salanova, spinach and SMALL beet seed with success.

Thanks Diego for proving a good product and service. It’s been a big help and a good purchase.

  5. Chad Gard

The starter kit is absolutely the way to go! I wasn’t sure I really would need the included 4″ chain pots, and probably would not have gotten them if I hadn’t started with the kit. But I’ve used almost the whole case in just under a season (starting late last season, and now we’re a bit more than half way through this). I probably would not have gotten as many trays or spreader frames either. But it’s amazing how quickly you tie up 40 trays. I need to purchase more, because I’m constantly right on the edge of having every tray filled, and on raining planting day puts a seeding day behind.

This season has been extremely difficult, with cold and significant rain every day for the entire early and mid spring, which then hot and the rain completely shut off: no rain from the second week of June until the last week of August. Almost nothing I have tried to direct seed has succeeded. But darn near everything with the paperpot has done well. What we thought was going to be an improvement in efficiency has really saved our season due to the weather we had, adding a surprising amount of resilience to our farm.

Of course, we use it extensively for lettuce and salad greens. But some things we never transplanted before, and may not be obvious, have been great with the paperpot. The surprising ones for me were basil, peas, beans, and corn. With the constant rain making planting difficult and cultivation nearly impossible, only with quick transplanting were we able to get enough ahead of the weeds to keep them at bay and get a harvest.

The paperpot system has easily paid for itself in the first year alone, in far more than the ways we expected.
