Roller, sprocket and row settings for 18 common crops, developed with market farmer Erich Schultz of Steadfast Farm. Start here, then adjust for your seed lot and soil.
Four settings for every crop
Roller
The letter is the hole size, the number is how many holes. X24 = X-size holes, 24 per roller.
Sprockets
Front x rear. “14 x 9” means the 14-tooth sprocket in front and the 9-tooth in the rear of the chain box.
Rows and brush
Rows are for a 30″ bed; a JP5 seeds 10 rows in two passes. Start every crop with the hopper brush down.

Three checks that save a bed
- Size the roller to your seed. Seed lots vary. Check your seed in the gauge on the hopper lid; see how to choose a seed roller.
- Test at the bench. Turn the hopper sprocket by hand over a bowl and make sure every hole drops seed.
- Prime the seeder. Push it one turn of the drive wheel before the bed starts so the first foot of row isn’t bare.
