Scott Hebert started farming in June 2015 when his family business shut down. At that time he didn’t have anything to fall back on. But he had always had an interest in farming, and within a few days of getting the income shock warning his wheels had been put in motion and he was putting a plan into place to transition into a career as a farmer.

He contacted Curtis to visit his farm, so he could start leveraging Curtis’ experience to plan his farm and his future. Because he knew wanted to farm, but didn’t want to be broke, therefore, he had to make money at it, and that meant he had to have a plan and a strategic approach.

And it’s that approach that we will be talking about in today’s show.

It’s currently February 2016 and this episode was recorded with new farmer Scott Hebert a couple of months ago in December 2015.

Find out what a transition into small scale farming is really like…

Notes from this episode with farmer Scott Hebert..

  • Scott knew he wanted to farm, but didn’t want to be broke, so he had to make money at it, so he had to have a system to do that.
  • When his dad’s cabinet shop was closing he came to the point where he had to make a life move, and farming was the direction he shifted towards.
  • His day said… “we are going to close the shop in two months…”  Scott’s response “OH SHIT! I don’t have anything.”  But that date warning was the catalyst to change and a few days later he started to put a plan into place for transition.
  • Scott has the same worries that everyone has like, how am I going to pay my bills?  But it didn’t stop him from trying.
  • Scott took on another job on the side, and got it down to 4 days a week and 40 hours per week, so he could supplement his income and spend a year learning how to farm.  This took the pressure off of producing from the farm right away.  The restricted hours at the other job still leaves him with time to work on the farm.
  • Have a plan and know that the plan can change, but if you don’t have a plan you may struggle to get stuff done.
